A pearl is a living being, cultivated in a pearl oyster or mother-oyster. According to its nature and origin there are many types:

Kinds of pearls

- Freshwater or cultured in sweet water pearls: Natural pearls.. Created from organic matter and exclusively produced by certain mollusks. The most important characteristic is that there is no human being involvement in their production, in other words, these pearls do not have artificial core, so they are very difficult to be obtained completely rounded. They are mainly cultivated in China lakes and rivers. Read more about freshwater pearl.

- Mabe pearls: This kind of pearls is created when there is a hemispherical artificial core inside the oyster. The pearl reacts segregating nacre. Those usually are white and their particular shape is semi-rounded. Read more about mabe pearl.

- Cultured Akoya pearl or Japanese pearl: the name of the oyster in which is cultivated this kind of pearl is called AKOYA. The culture process is carried out in the sea. A synthetic core is inserted inside the oyster; the oyster reacts covering the core creating a pearl. Its size usually fluctuates between 3mm and 10mm and its shape is completely rounded.

- Australian pearls or South Sea pearl: they are natural pearls cultured in seawater, in Australian and South-east seas. Their size is bigger, and fluctuates between 9mm and even 20mm. These pearls have an excellent culture. They are very reputable. Read more about Australian pearl.

- Tahiti pearl: Cultured in French Polynesia, its range of colors goes from a grey scale, cobalt blue to black. These pearls have a great size, between 8 and 18 mm. And they are very valuable if their shape is perfect. Read more about Tahiti pearl.

Pearl features

-Culture and luster: always pay attention in order to choose a pearl. It is the shine from inside that is reflected in its surface what is related with the number and thickness of nacre layer that the pearl has. It could be very sparkling, sparkling or dull. See representative image.

- Color: being a natural product the range of tonalities is infinite, from pure white to Tahiti pearl grey; from pink tone to the golden tone of some variety of Australian pearl. Overall, the most appreciate one is white, with a good culture and luster.

- Size: it is the diameter in mm. It fluctuates from 3mm to about 14mm. Naturally, the price rise together with the size, but it does not affect to the quality. See representative image.

- Shape: Cultured pearls in sweet water, mainly in China lakes and rivers, can be: baroques, button-shaped, semi rounded and rounded, which are the most valuable. See representative image.
